The GED Tests
The official GED exam confirms that you have the basic skills taught in a four-year high school program. The questions on the exam emphasize problem solving, critical thinking, and skills for the workplace and for higher education. There are five tests. In most cases, you will be given short reading passages to answer multiple choice questions, but there is a required written essay as Part 2 of the “Language Arts, Writing” exam. Graphic interpretation is a very important area in almost all the tests.
- TEST 1: LANGUAGE ARTS, WRITING
- (Part 1: 75 minutes, 50 questions; Part 2: 45 minutes, essay)
Both parts must be taken at one time. Part I involves analyzing short passages to find and correct mistakes in structure, grammar and usage, mechanics, and organization.
- Part II requires writing an essay on a given topic.
- TEST 2: SOCIAL STUDIES (70 minutes, 50 questions)
United States and world history, civics and government, geography, and economics.
- TEST 3: SCIENCE (80 minutes, 50 questions)
Physics, chemistry, biology, and earth and space science.
- TEST 4: LANGUAGE ARTS, READING (65 minutes, 40 questions)
Fiction and nonfiction prose, poetry, and drama.
- TEST 5: MATHEMATICS (two parts, 90 minutes total)
Basic math through algebra. Part 1 permits the use of a scientific calculator (Casio fx-260 solar fraction calculator), which will be provided for the test. No calculator use is allowed in Part 2. Scores from each part will be combined.
