Taylor proudly displayed her new car which the salesman had assured
her would cause her friends to look at her enviously. Her friends inspected the car
closely and immediately asked Taylor to take them for a ride. She happily agreed, but not
before insisting that everyone buckle up safely in their seat belts.
While cautiously backing out of the driveway, Taylor somewhat
carelessly ran into her own mailbox. Suddenly she began to cry, fearing her parents would
be furious when she told them about her accident. But with the encouragement of her
friends, she finally gathered her courage to call her parents. To Taylor's surprise, her
parents were strangely understanding. Instead of screaming at her, her mother simply said,
"Those things happen. You will have to be more careful backing out of the
drive."
"But I've already dented my new car," she cried. "It
will never the the same."
"Maybe not," said her mother, "but a dent in your
fender is certainly better than a dent in your head. Thank goodness you were all behaving
responsibly and wearing your seat belts."
